Michel, a visionary French music producer from Paris, traversed the globe from the vibrant avenues of New York City where he lived in the 70s & 80s, to the rhythmic heart of Brazil in the 2000s, to eventually settle down and retire in the serene paradise Island of Koh Phangan in 2014.
However, Michel’s concept of retirement is far from ordinary. In 2020, he stumbled upon a mesmerizing piece of land in Sri Thanu, crowned by an imposing rock surrounded by a majestic century-old tree that radiates a unique energy. It was a moment of instant connection, and Michel envisioned a sanctuary on this land.
His creativity led him to design a first house, then, and without cutting a single coconut tree, 5 others houses and a restaurant named Shalimar followed, giving birth to Shanti Rock Residence, an exquisite blend of simplicity and elegance, a style once described as « Morocco meets Bali ».
Nubia, Michel’s daughter, inherited her parents’ artistic and entrepreneurial spirit. She carved a multifaceted career path in Paris as, among other roles, a manager in the music industry, a dancer in a renowned French show, and as a DJ.
In 2018, her adventurous spirit took her to South America, where she solo traveled across seven countries. She fell in love with Brazil and made it her home, nourishing the idea of creating a ‘Guest’Art House’ – a fusion of guest accommodations and Artists’ residence that bridges hospitality
with all kind of artistic expressions and activities.
When Michel offered Nubia the chance to collaborate on his unique project, she seized the opportunity and moved to Koh Phangan. By January 2023, Nubia was at the helm of Shanti Rock, leveraging her broad skills and experiences to enhance this bohemian deluxe Family Guest House.
Michel and Nubia are not only committed to fostering a warm and inviting atmosphere but are also in the process of introducing additional facilities in the future, including a co-working space, an area equipped for yoga, dance and circus activities, and a recording studio. These new features are set to elevate Shanti Rock Residence as a versatile sanctuary for travelers, families, digital nomads and artists alike, seeking both relaxation and creative inspiration.
